There are many inns in Shaxi China that make use of traditional Bai building design. The typical arrangement of San Fang Yi Zhao Bi (三方一照壁) “Three buildings and a wall” has been the standard way of building here. The construction is typically rammed earth with post and beam joinery. The problem that all of these Shaxi inns face is noise coming through the walls. Old Theatre Inn was built in the late 1700’s and was formerly a village school, with a series of five adjoined classrooms. The walls were timber and plaster, having been rebuilt in recent years, but even when we added soundproofing materials, this did not prevent noise from the adjacent room form coming through.

This led to our decision to rebuild the interior walls from brick, but leave the wood cladding on the outside to retain the traditional look. As part of this work, we will be installing hydronic heading, which uses hot water from our rooftop solar panels to warm the interior walls via PEX tubing and a small pump, a first in Shaxi China.

This work will be completed in the Fall of 2014 so that guests will have the best quality sleep of any Shaxi hotel and stay warm during winter nights, which again, no other accommodation in the valley has been able to provide thus far, given the limitations of traditional construction.
