Comparing Shaxi inn management in the town, you will find that with the exception of Old Theatre Inn, the others are mostly run by Han Chinese people who are not from Shaxi or even Yunnan Province. These mostly young Chinese business people have rented out traditional family homes or stores in the town and converted them to guesthouse and souvenir shops that mainly serve other Han Chinese customers and do not benefit the local Bai people’s community. Old Theatre Inn is run by four women from Duan Village (Silian Cun) where our Shaxi inn is located (two of them are also surnamed Duan). We feel that this arrangement is a more authentic and sustainable practice for introducing our guests to the people and culture of Shaxi. The cooking is local, the charm is local and the women are proud of their Shaxi heritage.
In contrast, when visiting another Shaxi inn, you will find the food is made by non-local people who themselves have only lived in Shaxi for a few years. There is plenty of basic Shaxi accommodation, but we feel Old Theatre Inn stands out in its commitment to local people’s participation in the local economy and presenting guests with an authentic Shaxi inn experience.
