Shaxi Yunnan hotel guestroom at Old Theatre Inn
The Crane room is the Eastern-most guestroom, which means it is the first room to get light in the morning. It is a twin bedroom, but with at least one-day’s notice, we can convert these beds into one very comfortable California King-sized bed. The Crane is a great value for a Shaxi Yunnan hotel, featuring a full ensuite bathroom with separate toilet and shower areas.
Other amenities include:
- 24-hour hot water
- complimentary breakfast
- Handmade wool rugs
- Down pillows and comforters
- Antique tribal embroidery artwork
- Solar-powered radiant heat
- Complementary tea and bottled water
- Electric blankets in Winter
- Rain shower
- Hand-knitted wool slippers for Winter
- Laundry service
- Hair dryers
- Soap, shampoo and shower gel
Comparing Shaxi Yunnan hotel management in the town, you will find that with the exception of Old Theatre Inn, the others are all run by Han Chinese people who are not from Shaxi or even Yunnan. These Chinese business people have rented out traditional family homes or shops in the town and converted them to commercial enterprises that mainly serve other Han Chinese customers and do not benefit the local Bai people’s community. Shaxi Old Theatre Inn is run by four women from the Duan Village where the inn is located (two of them are surnamed Duan). We feel that this arrangement is a more authentic and sustainable practice for introducing our guests to the people and culture of Shaxi. The food is local, the charm is local and the women are proud of their Shaxi heritage.
In contrast, when visiting other Shaxi hotels, you will find the food is made by non-local people who themselves have only lived in Shaxi for a few years. There is plenty of basic Shaxi accommodation, but we feel Old Theatre Inn stands out in its commitment to local people’s participation in the local economy and presenting guests with an authentic Shaxi experience.
