Comparing Shaxi lodge management in the town, you will find that with the exception of Old Theatre Inn, most others are all run by Han Chinese people who are not from Shaxi or even Yunnan. These mostly young Chinese business people have rented out traditional family homes or shops in the town and converted them to commercial enterprises that mainly serve other Chinese tourist and do not benefit the local Bai people’s community. Old Theatre Inn is run by four women from the Duan Village where our Shaxi lodge is located (two of them are surnamed Duan). We feel that this arrangement is a more authentic and sustainable practice for introducing our guests to the people and culture of Shaxi. The food is local, the language is local and the women are proud of their Shaxi heritage. In contrast, when visiting most other Shaxi lodge, you will find the food is made by non-local people who themselves have only lived in Shaxi for a few years. There is plenty of basic Shaxi accommodation, but we feel Old Theatre Inn stands out in its commitment to local people’s participation in the local economy and presenting guests with an authentic Shaxi experience.
